Day 1: Arrive Easter Island

Take a morning plane to Easter Island from Santiago and meet your guide at Easter Island's airport. Transfer to the township of Hanga Roa by vehicle, or end your luggage ahead with the car and stroll to the hotel on foot. This short walk is an excellent opportunity to discover the township and explore the island.

Day 2: Orongo Trekking, Rano Raraku & Tongariki

After a morning visit to the iconic Tahai Ceremonial Complex, complete a hike through Rano Kau and Orongo. Rano Kau is one of the three principal volcanoes that created the island. Begin by walking south along the coast and visit the restored Ahu Tataku Vave located at the working port of Hanga Piko. Then explore the manavai gardens of the National Park administration center. Here, enjoy a beautiful view over the whole island with its distinct geological features as you ascend the crater. At the end of the trail, arrive at an outlook with a breathtaking view at the crater lake of Rano Kau. The path will follow the crater's edge until arriving at the ceremonial village of Orongo, where the birdman competition used to take place and you can see the spectacular petroglyphs related to this culture and the three islands situated opposite the coast.

Following the morning's trekking, arrive by vehicle to Rano Raraku--this stop could very well be one of the most amazing sites in the world. The volcano of Rano Raraku is also known as the statue factory. It was from the volcanic stone of Rano Raraku that 95% of all of the statues on the island were carved. There has been counted some 397 Moai at Rano Raraku. Some were completely finished and left waiting on the slopes of the volcano for their transportation while others are in various stages of completion still connected to the mother rock of the volcano. If you wish, hike to the top of the volcano and see the beautiful crater with its fresh water lake. Afterward, visit Ahu Tongariki, known as the largest monolithic monument in all of Eastern Polynesia. This amazing platform holds 15 of some of the largest statues on the island. With the surrounding sea cliffs and beautiful ocean background Tongariki is truly one of the most incredible sites on the island.

The unrestored Ahu Tongariki had been completely flattened and 15 statues slid as a result of a tsunami which occurred in 1960. Needless to say the restoration of this ahu in 1992-96 was considered to be an engineering feat lead by the Chilean archaeologist Claudio Cristino.

The final stop today is Ahu Akahanga. This is one of many unrestored ahu sites on the island. Here, learn about the turn of events which caused this incredible monolithic culture to literally come crashing down around the people. See a group of 17 Moai which were systematically brought down from their platform along with the ruins of the corresponding village.

After a full day of island explorations transfer to your hotel for the night.

Day 3: Trekking to Anakena Beach

Drive along Easter Island's scenic western coast to Ahu Tepeu. Walk along Easter Island's untouched coastline and visit the site of Ahus. This walk highlights some of the island's historical petroglyphs. The hike continues along the coast towards the beach of Anakena. You can explore the beach or take a swim before returning to Hanga Roa by vehicle. The trek takes around six hours to complete.

Day 4: Biking to Ahu Akivi

Take a private half-day bike tour through Easter Island's interior. The tour follows mostly paved roads and visits the sites of Puna Pau, Ahu Akivi, and Ana te Pahu. Puna Pau is a small secondary volcano which served as the main source of Red Scoria, a volcanic stone used for making the Pukao, or topknot, of the Moai. View over 20 abandoned topknots in the area which are covered with petroglyphs. Ahi Akivi is known as the only platform where the massive Moai look out towards the ocean. Explore the area and learn about the traditional ways used to raise the Moai to their standing positions. Ana te Pahu features a large lava tube where steps have been made to enable visitors to walk inside. View evidence of the gardens which the islanders used to plant in the cave.

Alternatively this morning, if you prefer to horseback ride instead of bike, your group may transfer to Hanga Kio'e for horseback riding. The ride extends from Hanga Kio'e, along Easter Islands northwest coat. Rich in coastal views, this trip also provides the opportunity to explore seaside caves. Conclude your ride at the beach of Ahu Akivi and transfer back to your hotel.

Enjoy a free afternoon to rent a bike, arrange for a snorkel trip, or just explore the island on your own.

Day 5: Depart Easter Island

Enjoy a relaxing morning in Hanga Roa before transferring to the airport for your flights home.

This was my first experience with Adventure Life - and I couldn't have been more pleased with the trip. The guides and local staff in both Buenos Aires and Uruguay were terrific - extremely helpful and accommodating. I really enjoyed meeting the friendly staff in Buenos Aires in person (I left my bags with them for the afternoon).
