Day 2: Isla Carmen or Isla Danzante, Loreto Bay National Park
This morning brought forth the waters of Loreto Bay National Park. Cruising through the park waters will be the plan, with a search for whales, sea lions, turtles, and dolphins that claim these rich waters. This presents an opportunity to learn safety practices during kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and skiff riding. Following lunch, a secure cove will be located on either Isla Carmen or Isla Danzante, offering a chance to engage in active adventures on land or in the water. As the sun sets, the cruise continues towards Bahia Concepcion.
After breakfast, the hook will be dropped in the waters of Bahia Concepcion, a deep inlet that opens to the North. The entire day will be spent playing in this waterborne desert, soaking up the sun and settling into the vibe. Options include staying aboard to enjoy the scenery, going ashore for varying levels of activities, or simply settling in at the beach camp. Keep an eye out for dolphins and turtles that frequent this area. The anchor will be pulled after dinner, and the journey will proceed northward.
Originally a bustling French mining town from the 1880s, Santa Rosalia possesses a flavor of that early charm, even today. This town is like no other in all of Mexico, even boasting a French bakery. The opportunity arises to view many historic structures and take an included walking tour to Gustave Eiffel’s Church of Santa Barbara (of Eiffel Tower fame), the French Bakery, and the mining museum. Guides will have these and other activities available throughout the day.
The bay and the little town hold the title of the “Marine Oasis of Baja California” due to the abundant aquatic life. This lovely area is also one of the finest boating spots in the Baja region, perfect for kayaking, small boat excursions, and ventures ashore such as hikes to Punta Gringa, visits to the nature museum, and even potential swims with whale sharks. It's also a great chance for guided walks and hikes or independent exploration. Additionally, this area is known for being one of the few places in Baja where the famed, and huge, Leatherback Turtle is spotted.
Several hikes will be available, including one to the prominent peak, offering an incredible view. Along the way, various species of cactus will be visible, with potential sightings of hummingbirds and perhaps a nesting osprey. This island is also renowned for encounters with blue-tailed rock lizards and a variety of sea birds. Beachcombing, snorkeling, kayaking, skiff tours, and hikes will fill the day with joy. In the evening, a campfire awaits after dinner. Naturally, vigilant observation for marine mammals is encouraged.
According to UnCruise’s research notes: “The islands of San Lorenzo, las Animas, Salsipuedes, Raza, Roca Raza, and Isla Partida lie parallel to the Baja Peninsula. This area is referred to as the Canal de Salsipuedes, and due to its extreme depths, mariners also call it the Trench. The chart indicates a depth in this area of 4860 feet!"
Field notes from the research trip tell the story best: “Went up the main arroyo that splits the island in half. Found numerous Pinto Chuckwallas, which slapped their tails hard on the ground as they scurried off. Hike was rigorous but enjoyed by all. Found hundreds of sea lions hauled out along the south shore of the island. Pelicans, boobies, terns, cormorants, gulls, and osprey were numerous along this rugged coast. This is the right place to spend a full day.”
This morning, the anchor will be dropped off at the Mulege River Estuary. Yes, a river in Baja! If conditions are right, kayaks, skiffs, and paddle boards will be set loose to enjoy this beautiful area. Later, an opportunity arises to go ashore, visit the beaches, and local shops in town, or even take a tour to the historic mission. Guides have several hiking options available for the day.
After lunch, join an adventure in Agua Verde Cove. Twenty-four years ago, UnCruise pioneered a relationship with local ranchers, the Romero family, who will be met and shared stories with. Then, take an included mule ride into the back country with them, hike the hills around Agua Verde, and snorkel at the famed “Roca Solitaira.” After Captain's dinner, the lounge invites for a remembrance of the time together.

Adventure Life couldn’t have provided a better travel experience, from the start of planning through the entire tip itself. The agents were very helpful and quickly responsive to our questions and needs. We were well taken care of and the trip was smooth sailing, both literally and figuratively. The cruise line, the hotel, and the extra excursions that Adventure Life provided were superb and without flawsThe price was reasonable when we compared the planned trip to what was offered by others. We would highly recommend both Adventure Life and Emerald Cruise Line to anyone interested in an enjoyable, relaxing, and informative travel experience.
