Sri Lanka Geography
Located in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a pear-shaped island with a total length of 438 km and a width of 225 km. Nearly 645 kilometers (400 miles) north of the Equator, Sri Lanka is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait, which separate it from India. Most of Sri Lanka's islands lie to the west of the Jaffna Peninsula, with the most notable ones being the islets of the southern Indian Ocean. At the end of 2021, the country's population was 21,497,310.

Sri Lanka's geography divides the island into three zones: the central highlands, the plains, and the coastal strip.
